Byting Bulldogs' Thirteenth Year

the 2023 byting bulldogs

This year has been filled with historic highs! Among our 24 team members, 10 are girls, which is the highest number we've ever had. In addition, we won two Excellence in Engineering Awards and one Engineering Inspiration Award, which was a huge honor. Our team achieved the title of Alliance Captains at the Houston World Championships, marking our first time achieving this feat. We were absolutely thrilled with our success!

The Robot, “Two-Can Sam”

This year’s robot was named “Two-Can Sam” because he has 2 CAN Buses allowing the drive train to work in the event of a failure in the arm.

It’s a swerve-drive robot meaning that all four wheels are powered, but also can rotate 360 degrees giving Two-Can Sam excellent speed as well as agility. Sam was designed to be able to pick up cones or cubes from the human player station as well as off the floor. The intake arm was also able to rotate 270 degrees to be able to pick up items from the front or the back.

The Game

The first phase of each MATCH is 15 seconds long and called the Autonomous Period (AUTO). During it, ROBOTS operate without any DRIVER’s control or input. Robots attempt to score the game pieces, cones and cubes on the Grid, exit their ALLIANCE’S COMMUNITY, retrieve additional game pieces, and “dock” on and/or “engage” with their CHARGE STATION before the end of the phase. The second phase of each MATCH is called the Teleoperated Period (TELEOP) and consists of the remaining 2 minutes and 15 seconds (2:15). During this phase, DRIVERS remotely operate ROBOTS to retrieve and score their Game Pieces in the GRIDS and engage with their CHARGE STATION at the end.
